As blood vessels branch, their total cross-sectional area increases. As a result the pressure and velocity of the blood decrease. The peak of pressure in arteries is the systolic blood pressure; the minimum is the diastolic pressure. By the time blood reaches veins it is no longer propelled by the heart. Muscles contracting around the veins push the blood, which can move only in the direction permitted by valves.
